A domain name drop list is a list containing the expired domain names that will be deleted from the domain name registry in the near future. These lists are typically used by domainers to locate expiring domain names with value.

The process of re-registering expired names is known as dropcatching and various domain name registries have differing views on it.

Expired domains that were formerly websites may be sought for parked domain monetization purposes. A domain that was used as a website and is allowed to expire will still maintain most of its prior inbound links. These types of domains usually attract their largest amount of visitor traffic initially after being claimed from the domain drop lists. As website operators and search engines begin to remove the former inbound links of the site, the traffic to the parked domain will decline.

Some domain names are more memorable and in higher demand status, but ICANN works on a first come, first served basis. After a year to 10 years, registered domain names expire and go through a release process. Thus, if the owner of a domain name forgets to renew or chooses not to renew a domain, the name becomes available to the highest bidder. Thus, anyone can acquire an expiring domain name once it is released.

Domain names are not available on the day they expired. Registrars will often wait 40 days before ejecting the previous owner and then hold the name for another 30 days or so in hopes the owner will renew.
